The city of Chicago is promoting a “tax whistle blower” plan that will pay cash bounties to informants who turn in business tax cheats. The payout will be based on a percentage of the amount recovered. Ed Walsh, Revenue Department spokesman said this:
“It’s just another way of bringing people into compliance,”
“It would probably be … a business knowing that a competitor is not remitting a tax. An employee [of the tax-dodging business] could know that, too. Typically, you need to provide some type of incentive.”
What’s to stop someone from just providing a list of every business in Chicago as a throw shit against the wall and see what sticks approach? What if a disgruntled employee informs on his employer but is later found to be in compliance, what penalty is there for the informant? If an informant provides bad information is he or she penalized, will they bear the cost burden of the accused?
I have a better idea. How about we just turn in all illegal aliens and any employer that hires them? See it’s okay to rat on fellow Americans but those who break the law by entering this country illegally are safe. You’re a racist if you want to turn in illegal aliens but you’re a patriot if you turn in a tax cheat. As soon as they adopt this law in New York I am turning in Charles Rangel. Should be able to pay for my kids college education both of them.
